Take a New Step Toward Wellness and Connection

A Letter From Breanna Williams
Programs Manager for Meals on Wheels Social Connection and Health & Wellness Programs

I have the privilege of spending my days listening to older adults share their stories, their challenges and their joys. One thing I hear often is this: “I don’t want to rock the boat.” That feeling is understandable—especially when routines feel safe and familiar.

But trying something new, something small, could help you feel more connected.

With our programming, we are not here to tell you to change everything. We instead want to gently encourage you to try one small new thing that might support your overall health.

Wellness does not have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s as simple as:

  • Getting up and stretching a bit

  • Talking with someone new

  • Learning how to do something on your phone or tablet

  • Finding a hobby that keeps your hands or mind busy.

From my perspective, the most meaningful progress I see comes from small, manageable steps—not big resolutions that feel overwhelming by February.

We have seen people feel unsure about trying something new, only to take a leap and feel proud when they do. Whether it’s joining a group, learning a new skill or saying yes to an activity they weren’t sure about, they simply take one small step and find it leads to more confidence and brighter days.

You don’t have to be perfect at it. You don’t even have to stick with it. Trying is enough!

Meals on Wheels delivers more than meals. We are passionate about delivering programs and services that support your overall independence and well-being. That includes providing you with opportunities to stay active, connect with others, learn new skills and feel supported at home.

This might look like:

Help with technology so you can stay in touch with loved ones

Friendly check-ins from staff and volunteers who care

Social activities and group events (click here to see what we have in store for January!)

All of these offerings work together to support your health and independence.

Meet Cindy Browne, one of our regular Health & Wellness program participants. Initially hesitant to join a “seniors’ group,” she has since realized the importance of embracing this new chapter of her life. Now, she not only participates but is a champion for planning and implementing program activities.

In this profile, she tells our Health & Wellness Program Coordinator Kara Harper, “It was my first group like that in retirement, of older people, and I found it to be a good component to my life.”

As we move into the new year, we hope you’ll consider trying something new—at your own pace. Ask us questions. Let us know what you’re curious about. We’re always happy to help.

Thank you for letting us be part of your days. We look forward to another year of sharing meals, conversations, and connection with you. We not only encourage you to take part in activities, but we also support you in exploring and discovering a greater sense of meaning and purpose through that participation.
