Recognizing Older Americans Month

Led by the Administration for Community Living, Older Americans Month gives us a special opportunity to reflect on and appreciate older Americans’ impact on our communities, culture and society. We believe it is our role at Meals on Wheels of Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky to provide support to the generation that raised so many of us. That starts with recognizing their impact and responding to their needs.

The individuals we serve come from many different backgrounds. They were born here in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, raised abroad and have called cities across the U.S. home. They are veterans of the Armed Forces, educators, transportation drivers, healthcare workers, artists and storytellers, small business owners and corporate professionals, chefs, machinists and more. They are members of civic organizations, volunteer with their church, participate in community projects, commit to lifelong learning and raise children and grandchildren.

Our region is shaped by—and made better because of—the lives, minds, talents and contributions of older generations. It is Meals on Wheels’ privilege to be there for them in this well-earned chapter of life. Here is the comprehensive support system we offer.

Supporting Independence

This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” focuses on prevention, wellness and personal responsibility as cornerstones of healthy aging. It encourages older adults to take an active role in their health—advocating for themselves, accessing preventive care and making informed decisions.

Meals on Wheels' delivers essential services designed to promote seniors' independence and well-being. From our flagship home-delivered meals to social connection programs, view the services we offer for older adults in the Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky region.

Nutritious Meals

We offer more than 50 menu options that meet nutritional daily needs for seniors. This includes seven therapeutic meals that respond to medical conditions and dietary needs, like a cardiac-friendly menu and gluten-free menu. We partner with LaSoupe and Five Star Food Service to expand seniors' options even further.

Seniors receive meals through our home-delivery service and congregate meal service. We partner with 24 area senior centers and community centers to serve breakfast and lunch throughout the week. In 2025, we delivered nearly 1.2 million meals for older adults.

Transportation Services

For older adults who longer drive or do not have access to a car, independence can be limited—especially for those who live alone. Meals on Wheels' transportation services ensures seniors get where they need to be so they can support their well-being.

Individual and group transportation services take seniors to congregate meals, social connections programs, social events, grocery stores and other destinations. We also offer medical transportation, providing reassurance to seniors who have doctor's appointments, surgical appointments and medical treatment.

Our drivers provide door-through-door service and our entire fleet of transportation vehicles if wheelchair-accessible. Read more here

Social and Protective Services

Licensed social workers on Meals on Wheels' staff work directly and compassionately with seniors to ensure their most fundamental needs are being met. Programs include:

  • financial case management to provide seniors and families with peace of mind
  • independent living assistance to support daily essential tasks
  • guardianship services to provide fundamental safety
  • senior care coordination to assist older adults with navigating daily needs.

Our team works with older adults, families and care managers.

Social Connection Programs

Tai-chi, floral arranging, art class, chess lessons, digital literacy—this is just a snapshot of the opportunities older adults have for nourishing their minds, bodies and spirits. Our social connection programs encompass physical health, wellness, lifelong learning, community engagement and artistic expression.

View info about our Digital Connect series—a three-class training course that equips older adults with the technological skills to navigate and make the most a mobile tablet device.

Become a member of our Friendly Caller Club—a volunteer program connecting older adults to volunteers for conversations and connections.

OTR Senior Center

Considered a home away from home for many, the OTR Senior Center is a warm and welcoming environment where older adults enjoy meals, social engagement and good company. The center is managed by Meals on Wheels and located in the new Logan Commons apartment building near Findlay Market. Here, seniors play games, enjoy holidays and special occasions, form friendships and take group trips together.

Pet Support

In a survey by Meals on Wheels America, 95 percent of clients agreed that having a pet around makes them healthier. It's pretty clear: Caring for seniors who have pets means caring for their pets as well. Our pet support program provides weekly, nutritious meal delivery for dogs and cats of seniors receiving home-delivered meals. This service promises a consistent and reliable diet for the companions who bring comfort and joy to seniors' lives.
