Every Day Can Be Independence Day
Most seniors prefer to age in place. After all, home is where the heart is. Memories and neighbors, too. With a little bit of help, some seniors are more than capable of living at home. That's where our Senior Services come into play.
We offer a wide variety of senior services that help them manage a variety of needs and help them flourish. Our programs include:
Summer Crisis Program
We partner with the Ohio Department of Development to help income-eligible Ohioans stay cool during the hot summer months. The Home Energy Assistance Summer Crisis Program provides eligible Ohioans assistance paying an electric bill or assistance paying for central air conditioning repairs.
Personal Financial Management
We help vulnerable seniors manage and protect their money, so they can live independently in their homes as long as possible.
Senior Care Coordination
This special self-pay program provides assistance to seniors to solve their challenges involving personal care, housing, finances, legal issues, medical care, and more.
Guardianship
We have volunteers who are court action appointed to make decisions for our seniors when they incapable of making their own decisions due to an illness or when an incapacity endangers health or safety.
Some seniors go there every weekday for breakfast, lunch, and activities. The senior center, located at 1722 Race St. in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine, is open Monday through Friday. Meals on Wheels offers bus transportation to and from the Senior Center.
The Congregate Meals program serves meals in multiple locations across Hamilton County. These community meals offer an opportunity for seniors to meet friends, talk about their common interests, and share their stories while enjoying a hot, nutritious meal together. Congregate Meals are served at senior centers and senior housing complexes. All of the Meals on Wheels sites serve lunch at least once a week, with many offering lunch five days a week. Meals on Wheels also provides bus transportation to many of the meal sites.
Transportation
We provide group and individual transportation, including to medical appointments, giving independence to seniors who might otherwise be homebound.
Many seniors enjoy the company and companionship of their four-legged friends. But feeding and caring for pets can be expensive, with seniors sometimes choosing to do without, so their pets have what they need. That’s why we offer our seniors who receive our Home Delivered Meals our Pet Program. Pet Program provides dog and cat food delivered as needed, as well as vouchers for veterinary services, which seniors might not be able to afford.
Meals on Wheel social workers are available to help older adults who live in senior housing complexes across Cincinnati. Senior living staff members work collaboratively with other local resources and providers to identify and meet the holistic needs of seniors.
Elder Justice Unit
The Hamilton County Prosecutor's office created the Elder Justice Unit in 2023. This team is dedicated to keeping the most vulnerable members of our community safe, including older adults who may be the victims of fraud, scams or other crimes. If you have questions about crimes against an older adult, call the Elder Justice Unit helpline at 513.946.SCAM (7226).
