Supporting seniors' independence and protecting their dignity
Meals on Wheels employs licensed social workers who provide a variety of social and protective services that respond to seniors' safety and well-being. We work with families, caregivers and care managers to ensure seniors are safe and their basic needs are met.
Our transportation services support seniors' independence in enabling them to attend medical appointments, go to the grocery store, engage with peers with congregate meal sites and more. We provide both individual and group trips.
Summer Crisis Program 2025
The Ohio Department of Development and Meals on Wheels of Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky offer assistance to help Ohio’s families stay cool during the hot summer months. From July 1 through Sept. 30, 2025, income-eligible Ohioans can receive assistance in paying their electric bill, purchasing an air conditioner or fan, or making repairs to their central air conditioning unit through the Ohio Department of Development’s Home Energy Assistance Summer Crisis Program (HEAP).
SOCIAL AND PROTECTIVE SERVICES
PERSONAL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
Seniors are especially vulnerable to scammers. We help them manage and protect their money so they can live independently and without major financial setbacks. We support seniors further by providing independent living assistance that alleviates challenges with essential tasks like responding to mail and scheduling appointments.
SENIOR CARE COORDINATION
This special self-pay program provides assistance to seniors to help them solve everyday challenges. This can include personal care, housing, finances, legal issues, medical issues and other needs that may arise.
GUARDIANSHIP
When seniors reach a point where making decisions for themselves is too difficult (whether it’s due to illness or when incapacity endangers their health or safety) the court can appoint us to step in and become their guardian to make decisions on their behalf.
Transportation Services
Reliable transportation is uniquely important for seniors, especially for those who live alone. It plays an important role in maintaining independence and aging with dignity, both of which contribute to better health and well-being.
Meals on Wheels operates a fleet of vehicles designated exclusively to transportation services for seniors. We provide individual and group trips for older adults in the Greater Cincinnati area. Destinations typically include our senior center partners for congregate meals, medical appointments and grocery stores. These services are critical for older adults who no longer drive, have mobility challenges or do not have access to a vehicle. We provide a safe, fast alternative to public transit and ride-hailing apps like Uber or Lyft.
Our fleet includes:
- 11 wheelchair-accessible buses
- 5 wheelchair-accessible minivans for individual trips and medical transit
- 2 passenger vans for individual trips and ambulatory medical transit
Individual Trips
Our transportation team can facilitate single-trip and round-trip transportation services throughout Hamilton County, or “inside the I-275 loop.” We offer through-the-door services for individuals who require assistance from their home to our vehicle. All medical transit trips are considered individual trips
Group Trips
During the week, our drivers provide rides to and from senior centers so adults can enjoy nutritious meals in community settings. Likewise, we arrange regular group trips for seniors to go to the grocery store once a week. Both offerings ensure seniors can meet their daily needs and equip themselves with essentials like healthy food, prescriptions, toiletries and other personal items. These trips also offer a meaningful opportunity for seniors to socialize and form connections with others, remedying the challenges of isolation and loneliness for homebound seniors.
